Power Transmission × Havish M Consulting

Where should work happen? Score every role, then decide.

As the power transmission company planned its workplace after the pandemic, HMC ran a remote workplace survey end to end. Managers gave their views and assessed each team member's role in a validated Excel form. A macro consolidated every response file, Power Query shaped the data, and Power BI turned it into a remote-readiness index for every role.

The Challenge

A workplace decision that had to be made role by role

Leadership needed to decide who works from home, from a company office or from a satellite office near home. Preferences alone would not do; the answer depended on what each role actually needs.

No one-size answer

Some roles need office infrastructure or in-person meetings; others can run fully remote.

Clean input at scale

Every manager had to answer the same questions, rank options properly and assess each team member.

Many separate files

Each manager returned their own protected workbook, saved under their own name.

Comparable scores

Answers had to become one score per role that could be sliced by BU, function, grade and life stage.

HMC Approach

Survey, consolidate, score, decide

One pipeline from the manager's inbox to the leadership dashboard.

Select a step to see what happened.

Discover · What decides where a role can work

Worked with HR leadership on the decision to be made.

  • Three options: work from home, company office, satellite office.
  • Factors that tie a role to the office.
  • Cuts leadership needed: BU, function, grade, location, life stage.

Deliverable: Survey blueprint and index factors.

Design · Two sections, one index

Manager views plus a role-by-role assessment.

  • Section 01: manager views, ranking of office uses and satellite locations.
  • Section 02: each team member's role scored on five factors.
  • Weights turn the five factors into a 1–5 remote-readiness index.

Deliverable: Questionnaire and scoring rules.

Build · Form, macro, model

Every step automated.

  • Excel VBA survey with login, validation and guided save.
  • Consolidation macro that loops through every returned file.
  • Power Query shaping and a Power BI model with employee and manager databases.

Deliverable: Survey workbook, macro, Power BI report.

Adopt · Run the survey

Managers filled the form and mailed it back.

  • Personalised passwords sent by email.
  • Validation stopped incomplete or duplicate rankings.
  • HR dropped returned files into one folder and ran the macro.

Deliverable: Consolidated responses.

Scale · Decide and revisit

The dashboard drove the workplace plan.

  • Option mix by BU, function and grade.
  • Satellite office locations ranked by managers.
  • Same pipeline reusable for future pulse surveys.

Deliverable: Workplace recommendation pack.

The Solution

From a survey form to a decision dashboard

The original dashboard and process map first, then five working modules: fill the survey, run the consolidation, design the index, explore the results, and see how Power Query shaped it all.

02 · The survey form

Fill it in like a manager would

A working replica of the Excel VBA survey. Log in, answer Section 01 (try breaking the ranking rules), assess your team in Section 02 and watch each role's index update, then save it the way managers did.

Login, names and email are synthetic. Questions follow the original form.

03 · Consolidation and shaping

Many workbooks in, one model out

Run the consolidation macro over the returned files, then step through the Power Query logic that separates rankings and scores Section 02.

Step names from the Power Query notes in the process map; sample rows are synthetic.

      04 · Index designer

      Tune the remote-readiness index

The index blends five factors with custom weights. Change the weights and the cut-offs to see how roles move between bands, and how often a simple rule agrees with what managers chose.

      Key Takeaways

What any HR team can borrow

      01

      Assess roles, not just preferences

Asking managers what each role needs gave a defensible basis for who works where.

      02

Validate at the point of entry

Unique ranks and complete answers at submit time removed most of the cleaning later.

      03

      Make the score transparent

Five named factors and visible weights let leadership see, and challenge, how the index works.
